My favorite golf courses in California

There are lots of golf courses in California so picking my favorites is a real challenge. Now obviously I haven't played every course in the state so I am sure that there are some excellent ones that are not on my list. However I have played quite a few courses and I can say that these are the ones that I enjoyed the most.

Pebble Beach Golf Links: This is the famous Pebble Beach golf course, there are actually several courses located at the club but when people say Pebble Beach this is the one that they are referring to. It is a challenging course that is located amongst some of the most spectacular scenery that you will find anywhere. The downside is that it is a very expensive course to play.

Poppy Hills: This is another course that is also located at Pebble Beach and for some reason it is nowhere near as crowded as the other courses, nor as expensive to play. This is hard to understand given that it consistently ranks as one of the top twenty courses in the world and is always very well maintained.

Torrey Pines: This is another of those courses that people who follow golf are very familiar with since it hosts a PGA event every year. Located in La Jolla there are actually two courses and both are outstanding and well worth playing. These are public courses so anybody can play them, which on the one hand is great but it does make getting a tee time a bit of a challenge.

Admiral Baker Golf Course: This is a course that is located in San Diego and which is actually operated by the navy. The navy have several outstanding courses in California and they are open to the public to play. Like most courses that you will find in California it is surrounded by spectacular scenery that combines both forest and ocean views.

Rio Hondo Golf Course: Located in Downey this is a course that is a course that is surrounded by trees so you have to make sure that you stay in the fairway. The course is always well maintained and the green fees are very reasonable. The only problem is that the course can be quite crowded and there are a lot of slow players who get in the way.

The Destroyer Golf Course: Located in Cypress California this is another of the navy operated courses. This one is a very challenging course with a lot of water hazards on it, that being said it is a little bit on the flat side. One of the more interesting features of this course is that it is located right next to a navy air station so you will be playing with planes taking off right beside you. Some people think this is great, others hate it.
